For some of those courses Gödel’s notebooks have been preserved, and from them some idea of the syllabi can be inferred. That for third-year physics, for example, included information on units of measurement, elements of basic astronomy, and the theory of forced harmonic oscillation (in particular the motion of coupled pendulums, including details on techniques for solving second-order linear differential equations).

Menger on the other hand, as already noted, was one of Hahn’s own students. After receiving his doctorate in 1924 he was awarded a Rockefeller fellowship to Amsterdam in the summer of 1925. There he continued the fundamental work in dimension theory that he had begun in his dissertation. The following year he received his Habilitation and was appointed Privatdozent, but he soon came into conflict with L. E. J. Brouwer – the beginning of a long period of highly publicized strife between the two, largely over questions of priority regarding results in dimension theory.
