Qxd 11/3/09 3:12 PM Page 5 Introduction 5 With regard to the field of Fanon’s studies, this research helps to address the validity of Fanon’s “two-revolution theory” of successful decolonization, and to answer such questions as: Does colonialism represent a unique and discrete subset of oppression that is different from racism, sexism, etc.? The research will help to fill a glaring gap in the literature on changes in the severity of legal punishments, especially as these changes apply to the precolonial Nigerian culture.
