In reminiscing about Doña María, Doña Zeferina always began by saying how much she adored her grandmother. Nobody influenced her more as a child than she did, not even her own mother. According to Doña Zeferina, Doña María belonged to a distinct race of people who had dark skin and beautiful light hair. She did not look like others in the village. ” As a result, Doña María never wore a xincueite, but she held on to the local tradition of going barefoot, even after others in Hueyapan began wearing sandals.
