Understanding a complex system means that we are able to construct a model which is capable of reproducing approximately its dynamic state of equilibrium, and to predict how this equilibrium will shift in response to various perturbations. We know from numerous measurements that perturbations of our natural environment by anthropogenic activities have been rapidly increasing.
