Turner and Rojek (2001) add another dimension, ‘vulnerability’, to the idea of uncertainty: the vulnerability of our embodiment. Yet vulnerability also has positive aspects: it ‘suggests an openness to the world and our capacity to respond to that openness in ways that are creative and transformative’ (Turner and Rojek, 2001: xi). Furthermore, they argue that frailty implied in vulnerability is central to humanity, having the capacity to unite human beings. Uncertainty in this sense is borne out of our own physical vulnerability, carrying both positive and negative opportunities.
Plath et al. conclude that the second approach, that of ‘infusion’, is more effective as a learning strategy. The point of this is that students learn to identify values in all aspects of social work and the capacity to engage critically with their own and others’ value positions. The underlying ethos is that there are clear strongly shared primary values underpinning social work, while there is considerable diversity at the secondary level; at both levels, however, there will be many times when values are in conflict, even those held by an individual.
However, this is not an arbitrary process; Banks (2006: 34) calls it a ‘common morality’ perspective, arguing that in everyday life most people use ‘considered judgements’ that build up coherent positions through experience. Indeed, sometimes values may conflict, and each of us finds ways of reconciling our values so that we maintain a plausible sense of integrity (we return to this below). Understanding diversity in values Each individual social worker brings a unique set of personal values to the professional role.
