What a pity! If my psychic process were to stop at this sensory information level, I would be hungrily gobbled up without further ado. But, happily, I had already stored in my brain many more important pieces of information about tigers and, at the Knowledge level, I already knew that the tiger was dangerous. I knew that I could bar the door and lock it. I knew that I had legs, so I could run and take refuge on the top floor. I knew that I could save myself, like the mouse fleeing the cat. 35 THE AESTHETICS OF THE OPPRESSED As a human, however, I am not necessarily reduced to flight.

In contrast to the Declaration of Identity (see below), where the subject is turned inwards to their internal world, this is an opportunity to reflect on the panoramic vision which each of us has of the world we live in. It is not 44 A THEORETICAL FOUNDATION enough just to tell the story – the participant must reveal in what particular, unique fashion this event made an impression on him or her, something personal. If the first attempt remains in the realm of mere narration, it must be insisted that the participant digs deep in his or her memory and reveals more subjective impressions.

To use the words of the satirical poet Juvenal (AD 42–125) describing the Romans in their decadence, or Pan y Toros (Bread and Bulls), as the Spanish say. In every human being there squats a hominid: let us not fall into temptation. Let us be metaphoric – let us be people! The Aesthetics of the Oppressed aims at the liberation and fortification of metaphoric activity, of symbolic languages, of intelligence and sensitivity. It aims at the expansion of the perception that we have of the world. This is done through the Word, the Image, and the Sound, guided by a Humanist Ethic.
