An intricate neuronal network regulates the secretion of hypothalamic CRH from parvicellular neurons of the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) (Fig. 2). These neurons have axons that terminate in the median eminence and secrete CRH into the hypophyseal portal system and axons that terminate in the locus ceruleus (LC)/norepinephrine (NE) sympathetic system neurons in the brainstem [28, 101]. Neurons of the latter systems send projections, mostly noradrenergic, to the PVN [30]. Thus, a reverberatory neural circuit is formed between the CRH neurons and those of the LC/NE sympathetic systems, with CRH and norepinephrine stimulating each other (Fig.
