Don’t defend or explain your performance. 1 4 ACTING BASICS – THE FOUNDATION personal need to explain what you are doing (especially when it seems you haven’t been accurately received). Put your attention back into the work and communicate through your acting. The audience won’t have the benefit of your annotated study guide, so telling your classmates or your director what you meant to do won’t help you. This may require a lot of self-restraint. Your audience is your mirror – don’t cloud it. You risk something else important if you tell your observers too much.

Now you’re addressing the character’s objective. That is not only actable, it will force you to act. An objective is the rocket fuel that drives the character’s behavior. ” The first is the rational why; the second is the passionate and desperate what for. The trigger word to watch for is because.
