Now, forty years after that 1956 edition, the publishers are making the book available again, complete with the late Mr. Adams's introduction and, for the first time, an index. Interest in Texas desperado Sam Bass has not diminished in the past forty years. His name remains today, as it has for twelve decades, high in the pantheon of colorful Western outlaws. In his introduction, Adams enumerated the books devoted to this Texas outlaw that appeared between 1876 and 1956, including Martin's Sketch of Sam Bass, which was published two years after the death of the outlaw.
Copies of the first edition seem to have disappeared, also, though there are some reprints still occasionally found in rare-book dealers' catalogs. The most common of these reprints is the one published by John A. Norris, of Austin, Texas, issued in blue wrappers. It was later reprinted by H. N. Gammel, of Austin, and issued in tan wrappers. Although the original contained illustrations, neither of Page xi these reprints retained them. The latest reprint of this book was made by the Frontier Press, of Houston, Texas, in 1952, and contains new illustrations from the famous Rose Collection.
This Bass book is similar to the one written by Hogg in 1876, for there was nothing much new to add since both got their information from living eyewitnesses and contemporary newspaper accounts. This brings us to the last of the quartet of rare books on Sam Bass, herewith being reprinted for the first time. When we consider that all the other books of this group have been reprinted, I think the University of Oklahoma Press is to be commended for bringing this bookthe rarest of the lotwithin the reach of those interested, who would likely never see a copy of the original.
