Grabbing the handle, I tried to lever it down, but it didn’t give a millimetre. Tugging and wrenching at it didn’t help either. I looked desperately round the little storeroom; any second now that door might open and a man with a knife come through. I was lucky: this wasn’t like the apartment upstairs; it was a working area.
